Be Still
“Prayer is the act of seeing reality from God’s point of view.”
Phillip Yancy
Our reality can lie to us. Our reality - how we view our lives, situations, purpose, vocation, parenthood, church etc. etc. etc. can get skewed through the lens we look through. Every situation, every experience, every choice and decision - positive or negative, healthy or unhealthy creates a line on our lens that we see life, God, people out of. The lines on our lens can distort not only how we look and respond to things but possibly the actual truth and reality.
We need to spend time with God and get our lens checked and cleaned.
“Be still and know that I am God;”
Psalm 46:10a
Did you know that the words “Be Still” in Latin mean “vacate".” We get our English word “vacation” from it.
”The invitation of prayer anytime, anywhere is this: Take a vacation. Stop playing God over your own life for a moment. Release control. Return to the created order.” Tyler Stanton
There are so many things that happen in life that I have absolutely no control of, yet that doesn’t stop me from trying, or worrying, or creating different scenarios and what I would do in each of them. Oy! It’s exhausting.
THAT. IS. NOT. BEING. STILL.
That is not allowing God and His truth - His reality to shape mine.
When we are still - when we release control - we allow God to show us truth in a situation or correct a misconception.
By being still, we trust.
We trust that He is faithful.
We trust His character.
We trust Who He is - how much He loves us - How big He is and acknowledge that He can carry us and our world.
I am reminded how small I am - I am reminded of my place - as a daughter (or son) of a Loving God, not the one in control but the one being held.
Ann Voskamp says: “Terrible things can happen in this world - and yet God does miraculous things in tombs!”
We all have had and will continue to have tomb moments. Times where being still and trusting is hard. Our lens are lined with past brokenness and pain and we struggle to release the control of the situation or person.
What if in those moments we practice being still or taking a vacation - a break from the worry and turmoil to focus on God - His love for us - His faithfulness towards us - His goodness.
We practice bringing Him back to the center of our line of sight instead of leaving Him on the peripheral sides of our vision.
We allow Him to erase some of those lines that are distorting our vision so we can see Him more clearly?
What miraculous things would we find there in the tomb? The place of our struggle, where we lay down our striving to rest. To take a couple of deep breaths and listen to His heartbeat and remember “I don’t have to fix this.” “It’s not all on me to figure out.” “I am not alone.”
What would we find?
I’m working on finding out.
I’d love for you to join me!
You have an invitation from the Living, Loving God. Will you BE STILL before Him?
I hope you have a wonderful day and find some time to Be Still with your Father.
All My Love ~
